We celebrate our Freedom each Independence Day.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us Free" (Galatians 5:1)

This was the first year we actually talked together about the things we are free to do, pursue and become as citizens of the United States of America.  My oldest wrote a list that began with two simple yet profound words:  Worship God

"What else?"  I prodded.
"I can say what I want and write what I want."
"How about all the pictures you draw, are you free to draw whatever you want?"
He smiled then scribbled some more words and drew a picture.
He thought hard for a moment then wrote, "Make money."
"And then?"
"Spend my money?" He asked.
I nodded then asked "and how do people make money?"
"By going to work."
"Yes, but who tells what work they have to do?"
"Well... everyone gets to choose their job."
"And so..." I wanted to know.
"And so we are free to choose our job."

He wrote a few more things down, like the freedom to go to target and church camp, then ran off to play with his cousin.  I didn't call him back or read the declaration of Independence to him.  I didn't want to shackle him with too much of a lesson when right now I simply want him to experience freedom and be thankful for it.

If, however, you are ready to teach your children more about the History of our Great Nation, visit Angie over at Celebrating Holidays.  She always has wonderful facts to share about America's traditions and the Christian influences that have worked to shape our Country.  There are recipes and craft ideas, as well as links to songs and explanations about our Country's familiar symbols.  This is my go-to site to prepare for Holidays.

Now drape your house in red, white, and blue... and get ready to celebrate our Country's Birthday with your family!  Happy 4th of July.
