Last Saturday our Middle-Miracle swam right into an exciting milestone. Brodacious (as he's come to refer to himself) finally won enough ribbons in his swim competitions to earn his first. trophy. EVER! Not counting the one he received two years ago for showing up to pick daiseys on the Soccer field.
You see, unlike every other sport our boys have played, simply showing up doesn't grant you a prize in the pool. At Waterworks Aquatics in Carlsbad, CA. (they also have a facility in Irvine) it takes commitment and hard work to earn one of their highly coveted statues. For Brody it took 9 months and 8 swim meets to walk away with his prize.
This past Saturday, after competing in his 25 yard freestyle, 25 yard backstroke, and 25 yard breast stroke, Brody was awarded his 15 ribbon trophy. It was the thrill of his young athletic life.
As we loaded up in the car to take his prize home, my husband looked over the hood of the car at me and winked, "Way to raise winners, Mama."
I can't take all the credit, Coaches Matthew and Ryan have worked tirelessly with Strong, Squirrelly, and Stubborn since September. I brought Brody into them as a wiggly, stringy, unfocused, goofball... now he has earned not only a trophy, and not just muscle mass, but confidence and a healthy measure of pride in himself. And most exciting of all, to this Mama who has grown to love the astringent scent of Chlorine in the morning, Brody is growing in his respect for authority outside of our home.
It's been a win - win - win - win.... all the way around for us.
I believe it's crucial to know the individual needs of our children. To know their natural bent, their personal interests, and the unique way God designed them to grow, stretch, and express their special design.
When Matt gave me props for raising winners, I imagine he was actually saying "Way to go, Wendy! Way to know our boys and find just the right thing for them to excel at. So it wasn't AYSO or Little League for our Brodacious.... You took the time to find the perfect place for him, and I am proud of you both!"
